Frequently Asked Questions

Learning first aid can seem intimidating. Review our frequently asked questions below to learn more about what courses are right for you, what you can expect from our trainings and what it means to be certified.

First Aid Courses

Registration

  • Family Plus First Aid reminds participants to stay home if they have any symptoms of illness prior to class and provides accommodation for participants wishing to reschedule due to illness.
  • Family Plus First Aid informs participants they will need to be wearing a face mask to enter the classroom and complete training. If participants are unable to wear a face covering to their class, they will not be admitted into the class and must reschedule.

Prescreening

  • Before admittance into the class: All participants will be asked to determine if they have been ill or have had any signs of illness within the last 24 hours (fever, cough, breathing difficulties/shortness of breath, or other symptoms), or been in contact with someone who is ill. See screening questions.
  • Participants who have pre-existing conditions (e.g., allergies causing sneezing) will be discouraged from attending training. This extra due diligence ensures all participants in the course can feel secure.

Building protocols

  • Building signage will include a notice asking those entering to not do so if they are ill or showing signs of illness.
  • There will be markers for those standing outside the premises or where to stand within the premises.
  • There will be indications where participants should go when they have entered the premises for their training. Directional signage or markings on the floor will be used.
  • Easy, visible access to sanitization stations will be provided near the classroom space. For example, sanitization stations will include a space to wash hands with soap and water, paper towels instead of cloth towels, hand sanitizer, etc.
  • The kitchen will be closed.
  • Only one person will be allowed in the washroom at a time. Others will wait outside two meters away from each other. There is a sink for hand washing, liquid soap, paper towels and a Canadian Red Cross poster on how to wash hands.

Classroom training equipment protocols

  • All non-disposable equipment and mannequins used during the class will be cleaned prior to participant use (fabric equipment such as mannequin’s clothing and blankets will be either washed or quarantined at least 72 hours).
  • Each participant will use their own full body mannequins and practice all the skills on a mannequin in their own station two meters away from others.
  • All disposable materials will be provided for participant’s individual use, including gloves, one-way-valve, etc. (Pocket mask and disposable one-way-valve will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own.)
  • Disposable lung bags will be removed from mannequins after use. New replacement lung bags will be reinstalled in mannequins just prior to the next use.
  • Small props (such as EpiPens) will be cleaned and disinfected using 70% isopropyl or ethyl alcohol, or a similar disinfecting wipe after each user has handled the item and also prior to storage.
  • Hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes will be provided for participants in the classroom. Participants should bring their own surgical/procedural/non-medical mask, tissues, water, coffee, two pens, and electronic device if they want to use a digital course manual (e.g. laptop, ipad, tablet, or smartphone).

Class size

  • It depends on the size of classroom, but there will be at least two meters physical distance between participants. No more than 14 participants in a class. Participants will stay in their own station all day to keep at least two meters physical distancing from one another.

Yes. Written knowledge evaluations are required for each Canadian Red Cross course that results in certification.

If English is your second language, or if you have a learning disability or difficulty reading, please discuss this with us when you register for the course or before your course date.

Knowledge evaluations must be completed individually — participants are not permitted to complete in pairs or as a group. Written knowledge evaluations are closed book evaluations.

If you do not successfully complete the knowledge evaluations you can go over your incorrect responses with the instructor immediately after the test.

Our goal is to help you feel more knowledgeable about first aid practices and better equipped to deal with a situation where first aid is required.

First Aid courses do require a certain degree of physical activity. For most people, the physical activity involved in a First Aid and/or CPR course should not pose a threat to their health. There are a small number of people who may find the physical activities in a course strenuous.

If you have any concerns about the level of activity involved in the course, please consult with your physician prior to attending the course. If you are unsure if you should participate in any aspect of the course involving physical activity, please email us and see the course instructor before the course begins.

ESL Friendly Courses

All Family Plus First Aid ESL classes are offered at a comfortable speed with a more comprehensive explanation of the First Aid material provided. Our instructor is a former ESL English teacher who understands the language challenges common to ESL students. However, if you are concerned about the language barrier, we highly recommend private classes. ESL-friendly classes may run longer than regular First Aid courses since the material is delivered at a more comfortable speed for students. Students can also receive material (via email) beforehand to help them prepare for the course material and First Aid language used in the course. Learn more about Private Group | Company Training
